Wow Factor: These Accents Deliver Portable Ambiance

By John Voket

It takes a really impressive product to make me stop and say, 'oooh,' - but recently, several discoveries of items for around the home really put the brakes on. In the first of two segments, we'll check out two nifty items to enhance the ambiance inside your home.

The first seems custom made especially for those who enjoy entertaining, or who just like to take their favorite tunes when they go between the bedroom, kitchen and patio. The Lyrix SoundGlow ( - around $50) is a portable, bluetooth speaker boasting crystal clear sound coupled with a candlelight ambiance that can operate as both a stationary and un-tethered device.

But the Lyrix SoundGlow is so unique because it assumes the shape of a medium height pillar candle, complete with a soft, shimmering glow providing a safe alternative to traditional candles.

It offers both a lithium-ion rechargeable battery and DC Power Input, a 3.5mm line-in audio jack to plug an audio source in directly, and a MicroUSB to USB charging cable. And fully charged, the SoundGlow should provide continuous illumination and music for up to six hours.

Speaking of ambiance, another item we discovered really lights up a room, wherever you decide to place it - from bedroom to library to your deck. It's from the minds at Bluworld of Water, which has focused on creating quality water features and high end commercial fountain installations all around the world.

Its Nu-Flame line of portable fireplaces ( and wall fixtures combine the best of modern design, technology and ecology. They require no venting they are easy to setup and are smoke and odor free because they burn bio-ethanol fuel, a renewable energy source.

Starting at just around $200, these beauties will have you and every guest to your home or workplace agog with wonder at their warm but minimalist styling. Choose a tabletop, floor or wall mounted model and enjoy the glow.

In our next segment, we'll explore the wow factor of a couple of new products for the yard and garden.
